Taking "The Road Less Traveled"

Author: Haley D. Sparks

Think back on all of the things you set out to do at the

beginning of the year. Think back further to those things you

promised to do by the time you reached thirty or forty or fifty.

Any regrets? How many things on that list have you set out in

full determination to do, but in the end, that devil on your

shoulder warned you against starting, telling you that you're

too old, too young, too out of shape, too afraid? Too often we

listen to that nagging voice telling us that we "can't" or we

"shouldn't." Too often, that voice leads to opportunities lost.

Now think back on all the times you went with your gut feeling,

not that voice in your ear. I would bet that nine times out of

ten, despite the fear and the doubt, you came out feeling like

you were on top. Pretty remarkable feeling, wouldn't you say?

It's so easy to succumb to the "voice of reason," we hear

screaming inside. Don't get me wrong, sometimes that is the

voice to heed. But I'm talking about dreams here, not those

decisions that bring into question our duties or

responsibilities. I'm talking about that personal something that

you've always wanted to accomplish for yourself, but were too

afraid. Those goals we set at the beginning of the year like

running a marathon, losing 15 pounds, taking a trip solo, or

conquering a phobia. When we have a dream or a goal, we mean

well, don't we? We set out to do it. But something keeps us from

it. There's that voice, that deafening voice that serves as an

insurmountable barricade, and keeps us from taking that first

step. It whispers, taunting us by saying that we're not good

enough, not serious enough, not ambitious enough, not smart

enough, and not brave enough. Ironic isn't it that all too often

that voice echoes in the same timbre of our mother, our father,

our husband or wife, even our children. Imagine your dream; it

could be ambitious, something that will take years to

accomplish, or even something small and personal to bring you a

little happiness. The possibilities abound when you are able to

ignore the voices, and take that first step forward. I did, and

it completely altered my perspective on where I was headed in

life.

My fianc้ and I just recently relocated from sunny Florida to

the green and rolling horse farms of central Kentucky. We had

both grown up in the Sunshine State and had little desire to

leave until he was offered a scholarship to attend the

University of Kentucky's School of Law. It was with heavy hearts

that we said goodbye to friends and family, 100% humidity, and

the tourist-filled streets. Once we arrived in Lexington, we

found that there were more than hurricanes and humidity missing.

People's accents were different, there was no Cuban food to be

found in any of the ethnic food aisles, and jobs that had been

abundant in the South were not as easily available up in the

bluegrass.

It was after a month of job-hunting (as though it were my job),

that I decided I needed to take myself on an outing. I had been

cooped up in the apartment, sending resumes, sending thank you

letters, desperate for human interaction and even more desperate

for a job. The pressure and the disappointment were mounting.

Yes, it was definitely time for an outing. I consulted my handy

"Welcome to Kentucky" guide that the Kentucky Visitor's Bureau

had graciously supplied me with, skeptical of what I might find.

I searched for attractions in the area, and one caught my eye

right away: The Raven Run Sanctuary. "A Sanctuary," I thought to

myself, "Now there's just the thing I need." The

description sounded promising, "a 470 acre nature sanctuary with

over 10 miles of hiking trails."

I was intrigued. But something kept me from walking out the door

just then. That voice, far in the back of my mind whispering "do

you really thing this is a good idea?" I began to doubt myself.

I picked up the phone and called a friend. Single and in her

early twenties, it was practically effortless to get her to side

with my wilder, adventure-seeking half. It only took a few

minutes of conversation to convince me that I needed to change

into a pair of shorts, a tank top and some good walking shoes,

and head out the door. My more cautious side prompted me to grab

a small backpack into which I threw a Swiss army knife, a

sweater, and a bottle of water. I was dressed and out the door

within ten minutes of having spoken to my friend.

The drive to the nature sanctuary was calming and pleasant. I

rolled all of the windows down and turned the radio off,

enjoying the sounds of tractors, the smell of fresh cut grass,

and the feel of the blowing wind along the way. The sanctuary

was about forty minutes from where I live in Lexington, and the

further I drove, the more I was reminded of the film

"Deliverance" and the unforgettable "You ain't from these parts,

are ya'?" scene, complete with "Dueling Banjos" orchestrating my

imagination. Again, the voice came back warning "this is

foolish, anything could happen out here!" A slight bump in the

road had me worried that my tire had gone flat, a wrong turn

wondering if I might be shot at for having trespassed.

After having unknowingly driven past the entrance to the park

twice, I was almost ready to give up, but I thought "what the

hell, I've come this far!" I had finally made it to the parking

lot, and to my horror, there was only one other car parked

there. "Oh lord," the voice said, "you're going to be murdered

or worse out here in the woods by yourself, and no one will find

your body for weeks, or even months." I took some solace in

knowing that at the very least I had told my friend where I was

headed. Even my fianc้ had no idea of my intention to go hiking

on a whim.

There was a sign that pointed to the "Nature Center." I figured

there would be someone there whom I could ask about the safety

of a young girl hiking on her own. I picked up an abandoned

walking stick, and started down a cemented path that lead

through a wood. It was quiet. I looked ahead, and saw nothing

but the path. I looked behind, and saw the same. On either side

were trees, and trees, and more trees. But I kept on, and

eventually came to an opening where there sat a small house with

a sign marking it as the Nature Center. A barn sat behind the

house.

There was not a soul to be seen, although there were four cars

parked near the small building. Employee's cars I guessed,

although I did not see any employees. At the window there was a

sign in sheet and a pile of maps with a rock laid on top to keep

the wind from blowing them away. I glanced down the list. There

had been six sets of visitors that day, all of which had already

come and gone except for one couple. No one had come on their

own I noticed, and most had remarked that this was not their

first visit to the sanctuary. I carefully wrote in my name. I

wanted to be sure that it was legible in case I was killed or

bitten by a snake or attacked by a bear. I listed the make and

model of my car, the number in my party (one), and stated this

was my first visit to the park. "Maybe I should lie," I

pondered, just in case some sick bastard chanced a look and

decided to hunt down some ignorant city girl in the woods that

day. I decided I'd take my chances. I opened my map, gripped my

walking stick anxiously, and took my first steps down the path,

starting my journey. It took me about a half hour of walking to

get used to the idea that I would not be running in to other

people.

There was a sign posted that said "Overlook." "That sounds

nice," I thought, and headed in the direction it pointed toward.

I came to a fork in the road, and consulted my handy,

Xerox-copied map. Either path would lead me to the overlook, so

which one to take? Robert Frost's "The Road Less Traveled" came

to mind. Both looked pretty well defined, but feeling inspired,

I took notice that the path to the right led into the woods, the

other through a flowered field, and I made the decision that any

reader of that poem would make, "and I took the road less

traveled by." It led me deep into a forest. Not a sound could be

heard save for the fall of leaves and my own labored breathing

as I trekked up and down the hillside. Then came the echo of my

fiance's voice in my head wisely stating "you should not be

doing this by yourself." I kept on with some trepidation. And

then I stopped dead in my tracks. A doe with her fawn were

lunching on a bush. It was the closest I had ever been to

nature. I stood quite still until my joints felt stiff and I

became eager for a better look. My step forward alerted them to

my presence and they dashed off, leaping further into the

wilderness. I kept on. I was beginning to feel better about

this, until I had a moment of dread recalling scenes from the

"Blair Witch" film. What if the paths were changing continuously

and I ended up lost forever? What if I was reading the map

incorrectly? I took a deep breath, and with great effort, worked

again to quiet these voices of the skeptical city girl.

After about an hour of hiking, I realized that I was walking

quite near a Cliffside. Again fear. Fear of heights this time. I

thought I could see water below, but was too nervous to bend

over the side and take a better look. I decided just to keep on

my path. It wasn't long until I reached the end. There were

several large boulders in front of me, and I mustered up the

courage and climbed from one down to another. I had not prepared

myself for the spectacular view that surrounded me. It had all

been worth it; all the fear, all the anxiety, all the doubt. I

stood about thirty stories above a river, and across me and on

all sides of me were cliff walls, cutting sharply into the

grey-blue waters below. And for the first time since I had set

out on this outing, on this search for sanctuary, I felt peace.

And more than that, I felt accomplishment. I had conquered all

of my urban fears to venture out into a breathtaking timeless

moment, hidden away from everyone else at that particular point

in time, feeling as though all of the trees and cliffs and the

river below were available only to me. It was as though I had

traveled through Alice's looking glass into another world,

another time.

I don't recall how long I sat there, breathing in the fresh air,

exhaling all of the tension I had carried with me from the

start. The voice stopped then, and a new voice chimed in. "You

did it," it said. "You weren't bitten by a snake; you weren't

attacked by bears, or killed or raped by some mad man, or

attacked by poison ivy." I felt like I could do anything just

then. I had even braved sitting near the edge of the cliff to

get a better look. And then I suddenly felt silly, realizing

that I had spent all this time applying my knowledge and

wariness of the asphalt jungle to this far less dangerous and

far more inviting rural wilderness.

I started my hike back worry free and filled with vigor and

pride and a sense of accomplishment. I thought back over all the

pedicures and shopping sprees I had treated myself with. I

thought back on the safe choices I had made that, in their own

way were rewarding, but lacked any real challenge and therefore

any reaffirming sense of "you can." I thought back and realized

that this outing, this desperation for sanctuary turned

adventure, was the best thing I had done for myself in years.

And that has made all the difference.

The Road Less Traveled

by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth

Then took the other as just as fair

And having perhaps the better claim

Because it was grassy and wanted wear

Though as for that, the passing there

Had worn them really about the same

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet, knowing how way leads onto way

I doubted if I should ever come back

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence

Two roads diverged in a wood

And I took the one less traveled by

And that has made all the difference

Weather the Storm to Compare Travel Insurance

Author: Kim Chambers

Source: articlerich.com

It is important to compare travel insurance quotes thoroughly. There is always some small exemption clause that can void an insurance claim, and in many cases those clauses surround the topic of the weather. Below are a few exemptions you would be wise to look out for when buying cheap travel insurance.

It is always worth taking the time to compare travel insurance small print with regard to weather. Rest assured the weather will rarely work in your favour when it comes to exemptions. Went on a summer holiday to soak up some rays, only to find bucketing rain for two weeks? Tough luck, there is no travel insurance company that will give you your money back for rubbish weather.

At the more extreme end of the scale, if you're on holiday in the tropics somewhere and you get caught up in a cataclysmic storm, then you can claim on your travel insurance legitimately if it affected your holiday dramatically. Be sure to check your policy however, freak weather can come under the elusive term of "Acts of God" which can be a get out clause for insurers. Insurance companies are also unlikely to pay out on your claim if the severe weather conditions were "foreseeable".

Understandably the weather can be quite unpredictable, but if a tourist board has issued a warning to travellers, or a meteorological association predicts storms/hurricanes/tsunamis, then insurers will argue your holiday circumstances were "foreseeable" and therefore you are at fault for negligence: deliberately putting yourself in harm's way. In the same way that a health insurance policy won't pay out to a customer for a pre-existing health problem, travel insurance policies won't pay out for pre-existing weather problems. If a weather warning has already been issued, do not expect help from your insurer unless you have made sure there is no specific clause in your policy.

Even if the weather is not seen as a pre-existing or foreseeable condition, there are occasions when an exemption clause can catch out the unwary. If you don't compare travel insurance quotes you could miss examples such as this. Imagine you're going on holiday to Barbados when two days before your flight, the hotel you were due to stay in is destroyed by a hurricane. If the hotel is unusable but flights are still running to Barbados then an insurance company may not owe you compensation. It is essential that you check before you book your holiday how comprehensive your travel insurance is in order to avoid disappointment.

Warning Signs That Your Job May Not Be Secure

Author: JoAnn Hines

Source: articleage.com

Sometimes there is just no way to foresee that you will lose your job. You MAY be able to anticipate it if you recognize the warning signs - if the writing is on the wall it's too late you missed the warning signs. For the most part there will be warning signals that all is not right within the company, but it's not always obvious when your company is already in a downward spiral. In fact, the bigger the company, the harder it is to see the signs.

Here are a few must do items:

• Pay attention to what financial experts are saying. Is it in the news a lot? Is the reporting unfavorable?

• Study industry trends. For example, are you working for the cigarette industry in the U.S. if so, chances are you will be downsized

• Read company press releases. What do they say? What is forecasted? Study the annual report. See any red flags?

• Follow the stock price and watch for sudden declines.

• Search for news about your company written by outsiders. Don't assume that your executives are being up front as to the state of business. The press can dig up dirt on a company long before executives are forced to admit there is a problem. The web is the best place to get current news. Set up your news alerts for you company and key execs.
Tip: GOOGLE has an excellent news alert in Beta testing. Go to GOOGLE.com and click on news to set up alerts.

It's your career and your responsibility to keep informed. There are many ways to stay alert and get dialed into the fact that some change might be coming your way. We have identified some of the most common precursors or warning signs.

1) Is there talk of merger and acquisition? This is probably the #1 reason to be on the alert for impending down sizing. Learn the myths (party line) the company espouses and learn to separate them from the truth.

Myth: Everything will remain at status quo
Reality: Sooner or later the workforce will be consolidated.

2) Poor business performance. Are profits down? Has there been a major loss within the company.

Myth: It's just a bad year and will rebound the following
Reality: Cost cutting is the #1 way to shore up sagging business profits. Jobs are usually the first to go. Where are you in the food chain?

3) Has a new exec been hired, a so-called "hatchet" man? The reputation of these types usually precedes them. If one comes to your company, watch out. The same can apply to bringing in outside consultants to analyze business performance. There first recommendation is usually cut jobs.

Myth: They have been brought in to strengthen the company's financial position.
Reality: The first recommendation is usually cut jobs.

4) Has the business been involved in extraneous factors such as lawsuits that negatively impact performance? (Example: the asbestos litigation. The money to pay the settlements, etc. has to come from somewhere.)

5) Failure to get FDA approval. If your company has counted on introducing a new product and fails to get approval, look for a downsizing of staff until approvals are attained.

6) Is you company ripe for a scandal or does it involve negative public opinion? (Example: Public perception of products such as cigarettes.)

7) Is the company not paying its bills or stretching the time limits to pay? Are vendors calling about getting paid?

8) Are budgets being cut? When the budget is slashed abruptly, it usually signals the company is desperate for cash. Layoffs are a strong possibility.

9) Has business travel been curtailed? When funding for business travel and continuing education disappears, the layoffs haven't happened yet, but they will soon.

10) Are veteran employees being forced to take early retirement or asked to leave with a voluntary separation program?

Approach the situation as if you were investigating your company for possible employment. Use the same due diligence you would exercise in a similar situation if you were approaching the company as a prospective employee. The numbers can tell the story. If you stay alert to what's happening at your company, you have a better chance of avoiding being let go.

When I started my career on the packaging industry I was just a lowly underling with no possibility for advancement. I tried all the "company touted" ways to advance my career to no avail. I was frustrated, disappointed and disenchanted about why no opportunities came my way. I was an excellent worker, on time honest and a top performer so why couldn't the "powers that be" recognize that fact?

It was because I didn't understand how to package myself. I didn't know that hard work and good performance DOES NOT equate to career advancement. YES, that's right a good performance does not mean that you will get promoted or a raise. Visibility is the key: who you know and who knows you is the magic door opener. And only you can make that happen. How much personal marketing have you done? I bet its not much. Its a methodical process that requires a commitment each and every week. And we all know how time crunched you are. But what if you have most of the work done for you and marketing yourself was as simple as filling in the blank. Former Spy and Top National Counterterrorism Expert Elsa Lee Warns Travelers To "Keep Your Guard Up" During the East Holidays

Author: Anonymous

Source: free-articles

Los Angeles, CA April 3, 2004-โ€"The FBI and Department of Homeland Security has sent out warnings this week saying there is uncorroborated information pointing to possible attacks on buses and trains, specifically, near major U.S. cities.

CNN is reporting that a bomb found under high-speed rail tracks in Spain today (Friday) appears to be made of the same explosives used in last month's deadly Madrid train attacks, Interior Minister Angel Acebes said.

Trains were halted on the Madrid-Seville route Friday after investigators found the bomb in a bag near the town of Villaseca de la Sagra, in Toledo province south of Madrid, officials said

Easter Sunday (April 11, 2004) is a busy travel holiday and one of your priorities should be security planning according to the experts. I

"It's so easy to overlook if it's not something people are in the habit of doing. But Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) spokesperson and Counterterrorism Expert Elsa Lee warns to keep alert, even while you're on vacation or traveling during the holidays.

โ€œFor those who are making last minute travel plans, security is even more critical, because their mind more than likely is focused on just making it to the destinationโ€ said Lee. โ€œAs for vacation planning it should include security. For example: families traveling overseas should have a three phase action plan. One for pre travel, a second plan while traveling, and a post travel action plan.โ€

The FBI and Homeland Security agencies issued these warnings to law enforcement and security personnel throughout the country.

"The plot calls for the use of improvised explosive devices possibly constructed of ammonium nitrate (fertilizer) and diesel fuel concealed in luggage and carry-on bags to include duffel bags and backpacks," states the warning, titled, 'Subject: Alleged Plot Against Major U.S. Cities in the Summer of 2004.'"

The recent railway attacks in Madrid used plastic explosives concealed in backpacks.

The Spain deadly terrorist bombings last month has sparked renewed congressional interest in the nation's only study on threat to a rail system released on the anniversary of 9-11 last year.

The study, to see what we've learned since 9-11, was commissioned and published in cooperation with the Orange North-American Trade Rail Access Corridor (OnTrac) Joint Powers Authority and the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). The study was completed as part of the environmental review process for the Alameda Corridor East strategic rail system that goes through Placentia, California.

"Southern California has become the nation's primary gateway for two-way international trade," said Executive Director Christopher Becker, of OnTrac. "The Alameda Corridor East rail lines moved about $116 billion in goods based on the manufacturer's value in 2000. The street value was much higher for these products. The street values of rail cargo traveling on the Alameda Corridor East in 2000 were $166 billion."

The study revealed what America has learned since 9-11, and what Homeland Security should address in the near future. The study findings could become a model for California and the rest of the nation.

"The disruption cost of shutting down the Alameda Corridor East represents a $414 million disruption value each day that it is shut down," said LAEDC Director of Public Policy, Greg Freeman. "The same 10-day disruption would therefore be $4.1 billion. An attack of 30-days duration would see a $12.4 billion disruption cost and go to $24.8 billion if the shutdown of the strategic corridor lasts for 60-days."

During terror raids in London this week, officials found and seized 1,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate. A group of eight British citizens of Pakistani origins were arrested on suspicion of being involved in possible terrorist attacks.

Elsa Lee is one of the few Americans who comprise the United States true-to-form counterterrorism experts. Lee is CEO, President, and founder of Advantage SCI, LLC (www.advantagesci.com) based in Redondo Beach, CA โ€" serving government and private industry clients globally.

Lee has 23 years of public and private sector experience in anti-terrorism operations, counterespionage investigations, threat and vulnerability assessments, and information systems security in the United States, Asia, Central America, and Europe.

Lee offers tourists and travelers these international safety and security tips:

โ€ข During pre-travel, a family member or companion should conduct a quick scan of news for that region, identify where hospitals are located, make a note of the address and phone number to the nearest US Embassy, and if possible, have an idea of where the police stations are located.

โ€ข Plan to take only the bare essentials. Leave your valuables and non-prescription medications at home.

โ€ข Take clothing that allows you to blend in with the local environment and that does not immediately identify you as an American. You don't know where the terrorist sympathizers are these days so you don't want to become a target or victim of terrorist or criminal activity by showing your patriotism in uncharted territory.

โ€ข Give a copy of your itinerary to a friend or family member and make arrangements to check back in with them when you return from your trip. Let them know when to worry and at what point they should consider taking some form of action.

โ€ขVisit the Department of State website for a travel advisory about the region you're visiting.

While in the military, Lee served in the Defense Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), U.S. Army Europe, the Pentagon, U.S. Army Intelligence Center & School, and the Defense Nuclear Agency and is a member of the FBI Los Angeles Infraguard.

Galapagos Islands Travel

The Galapagos Islands are a group of islands located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and coming under the administrative jurisdiction of Ecuador. These islands consist of 13 major islands, 6 smaller islands and several islets and rocks. The Galapagos National Park has established a monitoring system in order to guarantee the survival of the new colony of Galapagos Petrels. The human mind can only observe, absorb and appreciate so much at any one time, so, after a short swim and with our crew going into mental overload, the tour party heads back to the boat, coach, and dusty, but happy journey home. Tomorrow is another day when a visit to the famous and fabulous Galapagos tortoises is planned. These islands are so unique, and classified 'eco tourist' by the Ecuadorian government, there are strong warnings and procedural advice for visiting yachtsmen. Visiting areas other than designated ports, is not allowed, and if caught will face immediate arrest and probable confiscation of vessel.A Galapagos tour during the month of May can include some interesting aspects. Palo Santo trees begin shedding their leaves, and marine iguanas' eggs hatch. It is a beautiful and colorful time to visit the island on a Galapagos holiday. When on your Galapagos Island holiday you will have the amazing opportunity of coming face to face with the incredible animals and natural landscapes which helped shape Darwin's new theory and the way that people now think today. It is not enough to travel this far and simply walk around the ruins, or those of them that you are permitted to visit. The ecosystem around the area is fascinating, and luxury adventure travel to Machu Picchu would be incomplete without learning more about this cloud forest.Although many think it had ceremonial origins, current belief is that it was an estate of the Incan emperor, Pachacuti, and it is certainly not mentioned in any of the writings of the Spanish conquistadores. So far, this Dry Season holds normal conditions. July is an unlikely tropical month, and the overall weather pattern has not many analogies to other tropical destinations.Mantas are known to breach and sometimes even leap completely out of the water. No one can really explain this behaviour. It may be simple curiosity, communication to others of their own species, desire to rid themselves of skin parasites or they may be playing. Leaping male Mantas may also show their fitness as a part of their elaborated courtship display. The landscape of the islands is relatively barren and volcanic. The highest mountain amongst the islands is Volcan Wolf on Isla Isabela, 1707 m (5600ft) high. The Galapagos Islands offer a great family destination, where you can spend a beautiful, relaxing, and educational time together as a family; visiting impressive Island retreats, often far away from civilization. Few places exist where a family can enjoy this kind of combination. On this cruise you do guided land visits on foot. Depending on the island, you have time at a beach to swim and snorkel with sea lions and observe the marine life. You visit in the morning a spot, have lunch on the yacht when navigating to the next spot, and visit another spot in the afternoon. The crust of these lava flows cools off rather slowly, and it creates an isolating layer. Underneath, lava continues liquid for at least one more month until it totally cools off.

The Backpacker Who Didn't Need Travel Insurance

Author: Patrick Chong

Source: ezinearticles.com

He would never ever dream of wasting his money to line those "capitalist" travel insurance company's pockets by buying even a cheap travel insurance policy - no way! That's for his Mum and Dad; old Beryl from next door who spends a week in Tenerife every year on (and sometimes off!) her mobility scooter; and those unoriginal wimps that go on cliched package tours. Travel insurance is for tourists, not for him - the traveller...the adventurer... the Backpacker!

Yes, we've all met him - but how many of us meet him six months after his holiday; insurance now a word burned like a brand into his regretful heart. Chastened, broke, stressed out and sorrowful, he spends his days not bragging of his travelling adventures, but moaning of his travelling disasters. Travel insurance - he coulda, he shoulda, he woulda. Trouble is - he didn't.

Things went bad about three days into his trip when he landed in Bangkok on a stopover to India. He decided to book a short flight up to Chang Mai for a couple of nights to see the sights. On his last night he ran into a couple of Aussie guys in a bar, and so started a pretty heavy night on the tiles. The next day, his flight (and many others!) went without him as he slept peacefully in a rice paddy field. Waking up at sunset, he had to shell out for another (very expensive) flight to try to get back to Bangkok to catch his connection to India. He didn't make it and had to purchase a new (extremely expensive) flight for that leg of his journey. Story number one - "Travel insurance would have covered that".

Arriving in India, our hero put the disaster of his extra cash outlay behind him. After all, he'd save heaps in India because it was so cheap. Leaving the airport in Delhi he got a taxi to a cheap hotel recommended by the driver, dumped his bag, grabbed his camera and iPod, and set off to explore the city. Arriving back six hours later, he pushed open the door to his room to find it had been ransacked, and all his clothes, toiletries and most disappointingly his two-week's-wages North Face hiking boots had gone. Being a trooper, he took a long slug of water from the bathroom tap and resolved to keep his chin up. Story number two - "Even cheap travel insurance would have covered that"

Arriving in New York three weeks later, our young explorer (feet akin to tractor tyres from hiking barefoot around Southern India) looked forward to immersing himself in the delights of the city that never slept. He felt sure his luck was beginning to change. Celebrating with a cold beer under the shadow of the Empire State, he felt that finally he could begin to reminisce upon his travels without a bitter bile rising to his throat, when suddenly he began to feel very, very, very ill... Two weeks later with a stern warning from the doctors that his Giardia may reoccur sporadically throughout his life, he was discharged from hospital with shaky legs and a medical bill resembling a division one lottery win.

Story number three - "Yes, you guessed it - holiday insurance would have paid for that."

After this last calamity, our unfortunate fellow immediately cancelled the rest of his world tour and returned home, (with an extra charge on his ticket for the changes) to recuperate at his parents' house. Unfortunately he had to look after himself as they were both off on their package holiday to Tenerife with Beryl having a wonderful time - fully covered by their travel insurance.

Hotels in Sri Lanka are of surprisingly great quality and make for an affordable place to lay your head when traveling through Sri Lanka. Whether you are coming on business or for pleasure you will need a place for your body to rest and refuel from the activities of the day.

Traveling to Sri Lanka is easy, no matter where on the globe you start your travel

Sri Lanka is easily accessed via air where you can land in Colombo Bandaranaike International airport, which services flights to and from just about any place in the world and there are hotels in Sri Lanka hear the airport.

If you are coming from somewhere closer and would like to land in a less congested place there are a total of seven other smaller airports in which you can choose to land depending on which one is geographically closer to your immediate destination. Other locations, which maintain airports and have hotels in Sri Lanka, are the cities of Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Columbo Ratmalana, Gal Oya Amparai, Jaffina Kankessantu, Minneriya, Tricomalee and China Bay.

Getting there is no different than getting to any other location in this area of the world and it would be advised that you have your inoculations up to date and that you take care to heed any travel warnings that may be placed in and around the time that you are planning to travel.

You need to make sure that you meet the following requirements and that you have a passport and onward/return ticket and proof of sufficient funds are required. You may have a no-cost landing visa, which is applicable for 30 days, and is granted only to tourists when they enter Sri Lanka for the first time.

If you are coming in for business reasons you are required to have a visa prior to arrival and if you are coming in or to Sri Lanka for reasons other than tourism, then you must have an entry visa from the Consulate or Sri Lankan Embassy before arrival in Sri Lanka or run the risk of deportation.

As of this writing, the Department of State asks American citizens to be careful when traveling toSri Lanka and specifically warns Americans against travel to or in the Eastern Province and the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Travel Advisory Update On The Flu In Mexico

Author: Tim Longpre

Source: articlesbase.com

After all the massive publicity of the Swine Flu, and the closing of all businesses and schools in Mexico, finally things are looking up. Now that more information is present for analysis, other countries as well as United States are realizing how the cases of “Swine Flu” were not, and I repeat, WERE NOT linked with travel to Mexico. All businesses are open in Puerto Vallarta and tourists are taking advantage and are enjoying at this beautiful haven in Mexico. The Travel Warning that was launched by Centers For Disease Control (CDC) in opposition to “non-essential travel” into Mexico, which has been in effect since 27th April 2009 has finally been lifted and now only a “Travel Health Precaution” is there for travel to Mexico. Canada had previously launched a Travel Advisory for Mexico which was officially lifted on 18th May. This “non-essential travel” warning was put on Mexico due to the excessive media hype that was created about the Flu. Press conferences were also held where the Canadian Chief Public Health Officer Dr. David Butler-Jones stressed on the fact that the “outbreak in Mexico” now seems to be settling down. He also explained that it did not seem logical to put a travel warning to a country where the spread of the virus was similar to that of Canada; which is minimal. Since the lifting of this travel advisory, the PHAC will cease to provide notices of health alert to the air travelers that are leaving for Mexico. Also, quarantine officers which were previously placed on almost every direct flight coming to Canada from Mexico, will be removed. Nonetheless, the “Canadian Border Services Agency” will continue keeping a check on all of the air passengers who show signs of being under the influence of the swine flu. Majority of the Canadian Air Carriers have not formally broadcasted the outcome of the travel ban which was placed on Mexico. However, WestJet has announced that it will continue its “no flight policy” to Mexico till June 20th. But what is great is that Air Canada will definitely make a few trips to Puerto Vallarta in May. So I don’t think you should be waiting any longer, come on down, because here at Puerto Vallarta everything is safe and healthy. A Hot Spot Destination for Travelling Pensioners

Author: Diane Newsom

Source: articleage.com

There is no better place in the world to spend a holiday than Spain. Spain offers a myriad of recreational pursuits and you will have little or no problem finding splendid accommodation in Spain. In fact, when you plan a holiday in Spain you'll have few worries in terms of arranging your itinerary: this will allow you to focus on other important things concerning your plans. Purchasing travel insurance is extremely important whenever you are travelling and you should not consider a holiday without it.

It is important to remember that you travel to relax and enjoy yourself. With that in mind, it is easy to understand why travel insurance for pensioners is so necessary. With travel insurance in place you can concentrate on enjoying your holiday and get on with visiting all of the fabulous sights in Spain.

Mark Santilli, a frequent traveller, warns about the dangers of not having travel insurance: "I never thought that travel insurance was important. I quickly found out how wrong I was when my wife and I went on a trip to Australia and my wife became seriously ill. Our regular insurance didn't cover the emergency treatment she needed."

It is in no way safe to conclude that the new European health insurance card offers enough cover to you and your family. In fact, travel insurance for over 70's will cover many things that the new European health insurance card will not. In reality, travel insurance may cover unexpected cancellations, missed departures, lost travel documents, accidents, the loss or theft of baggage, travel delays and certain medical expenses that regular insurance just will not cover. For all intents and purposes then, if you are looking to completely relax and unwind while visiting Spain, or any part of the world, it is truly wise to make a small investment in travel insurance.

Spain is truly a fantastic place to visit and you'll love travelling from one major city to the next, checking out all of the historical sites that Spain has to offer: cities like Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Granada, Ibiza, Madrid, Malaga, Marbella, Oviedo, Palma, Salamanca, San Sebastian, Santander, Seville, Valencia and Zaragoza. What draws tourists to Spain year after year is the incredible history embedded in each city. Such a history can be thoroughly explored by viewing the unique architecture in each city and by visiting the many cultural sites that hold historical significance: sites that are scattered throughout the country of Spain.

Madrid, the capital of Spain and one of the most popular tourist attractions, possesses fine accommodation and cuisine. The Adler Hotel, the Petit Palace Italia and the Aptos Eurobuilding 2 offer comfortable and affordable accommodation to the tourist. The Adler Hotel, erected in 1884, is located at Calle Velazquez 33, Goya 31 and is the site of a former palace which has been completely remodelled to meet the comfort and needs of today's traveller. The Adler hotel has 6 floors and 45 rooms to choose from. You will find that the Adler Hotel offers every possible amenity including air conditioning, broadband internet access, satellite television, telephone access and an in-room mini-bar. Additionally, the Petit Palace Italia, erected in 1902, is located at Gran Via 32 and offers similar amenities as does the Aptos Eurobuilding 2, situated at Orense 69.

You find that there are restaurants of all styles everywhere—restaurants that provide the finest cuisine that Spain has to offer. For instance, when visiting Madrid you will discover that many of the restaurants are but a short distance from your chosen accommodation. If you are looking to get a taste of Spanish cuisine there is the Combarro Restaurant but if you are seeking contemporary cuisine, visit the Zalca?n. Likewise, breakfast and brunch are regularly served at the Chocolater?a San Gines and if you desire Indian Cuisine the Annapurna you will have no trouble satisfying your appetite.

Of course, you don't merely visit Spain for its fine cuisine and comfortable accommodation. In fact, pensioners visit Spain so that they can partake in Spain's magnificent history while they rest and relax on their holiday. There are well over 50 museums and galleries in Madrid alone. Be sure that you can spend all of your time in Spain enjoying the sights—get travel insurance for pensioners—feel safe about your trip and most of all enjoy the sun and the culture.

Travel While Black and Never Go Back With a Travel Agent ID Card

Author: Anonymous

Source: free-articles

"Driving while Black" has become an increasingly well known phrase. It is used to describe the discrimination faced by African Americans due to racially biased enforcement of traffic laws in the US. "Traveling while Black" may be a somewhat more foreign concept to non-Blacks but many people of color immediately recognize the terminology. African-Americans have long suffered injustice due to racial profiling. Discrimination while traveling is an important issue for Blacks and non-whites. All people of color must be aware of the potential for racially motivated complications while traveling. Blacks

must also educate themselves and know how to diminish the potential for problems. Renaissance Travel Group's ITA/CLIA Travel Agent, ID Card program shifts the power to Blacks making "Traveling While Black" a whole new experience.

Blacks must equip themselves with the tools and information that will make traveling a more rewarding and safe experience for themselves and their loved ones in these difficult times. Heightened security in this post-911 era is of course necessary. The problems associated with "Traveling While Black," however, have increased along with these tightened security measures. Blacks can empower themselves to navigate through this difficult situation by exploring means of making themselves less vulnerable. Traveling with a certified travel agent ITA/CLIA ID card is a very effective way for Blacks to negate some

of the potential problems while traveling domestically and abroad. Blacks can travel safely and with relatively more ease with this type of inexpensive identification. Careful preparation, mindfulness and taking advantage of tools, tricks of the trade and special travel agent incentives, credentials and perks can position Blacks to enjoy the kind of travel experiences that many others have secretly enjoyed for years.

Whenever ordinary (oft times deficient) human beings are given power by a governing establishment, one can expect abuse. The best way to handle the abuse that will inevitably occur is to be prepared for it. Blacks can benefit by placing themselves in the most empowered and prepared position possible when traveling in the US and abroad. Blacks and their families can travel well, safely and securely with just a bit more preparation, planning and by an enhanced sense of

community even while traveling domestically and abroad. Black CEO Bibi Jarvis with Renaissance Travel Group, LLC endeavors to help Blacks become aware of the many things they can do to make traveling less hazardous, more enjoyable and substantially less expensive.

Here are some important tips and information that all African Americans and non-whites need to be aware of "Traveling while Black":

1. Network With Your Community

Be sure that you are aware of what is going on with a particular airline, new security procedures and how Blacks are received

and being treated in various areas of the country and the world. Blacks should know what to expect when traveling to new places. Research the culture, openness to diverse visitors as well as the attitudes of law enforcement and security personnel. It is well worth the effort to ask around, communicate with Blacks who have already traveled or vacationed in the places you wish to visit. Be prepared. Connect with a Black travel agent and/or agency that can address your unique concerns and needs. Read as much as possible about the countries in which you plan to travel. Informing yourself about a nation's history , culture, customs and politics will make your stay more meaningful and less troublesome. Such information can be found in

most libraries, bookstores and tourist bureaus. Although English is spoken in many countries, it is a good idea to learn what you can of the language of the country in which you will be traveling. Renaissance Travel Group agents are happy to provide brochures and tourist information about the countries that you wish to visit. Write TravelLBLacey@aol.com with specific questions on the destination of your choice.

2. Select a Secure Hotel

Many US corporations have hotels abroad that are owned by local businessmen and staffed by local workers but managed by first class US hoteliers. You usually can expect levels of safety and security that are consistent with US standards. Renaissance Travel Group can provide a list of recommended hotels. Check with the Regional Security Officer at the US Embassy for a list of hotels utilized by officials visiting the area.

3. More Than Just a Passport is Needed When Traveling Abroad

Trouble-free traveling abroad requires a few other forms of identification along with a passport. For information on obtaining a passport contact: The Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs at http://travel.state.gov/ Due to heightened security a passport may not be sufficient to get you smoothly through all check-points, procedures etc. Always have several forms of valid photo identification. An excellent enhancement to identification credentials when traveling while Black is an authentic travel agent's ID ITA/CLIA card. It will identify you as a travel agent giving you the added benefit of status, VIP treatment while traveling and photo identification. Your Travel Agent ID card will also grant you financial advantages, discounts and deals that only travel agent's are privy to. Look into getting this card under the 'Independent Travel Agent' section at: http://FreeTravel.ResourceZ.com. Keep your passport and ID cards with you at all times. The only time that you should relinquish it is to the hotel if required by law when registering or if you are required to identify yourself to local authorities for any reason.

4. Get the Lowest Fare Rates Available

Never search sites by hand looking for the best times and fares. It is impossible. There is a free software program called BoardingPass that searches over 200 sites instantly and will report back to you with the lowest fare available on the entire Internet with just one click. This saves you time and money and makes "Traveling while Black" an immensely more enjoyable experience. NBC News highlighted the free BoardingPass software on a news program about travel aired last year. To watch a clip of the NBC News report go to:

To get your own free BoardingPass go to: http://FreeTravel.ResourceZ.com

5. Make Sure All Photo ID's Have a Recent Photo.

Your driver's license, passport and/or ITA/CLIA card should have a recent updated photo. If your current hair including facial hair, glasses, etc., appear look noticeably different from your photo, seriously consider having all ID's updated to reflect this. Remember, some poorly trained and inept individuals working in airports only need the slightest provocation to hassle a person of color while traveling. Do not give them an easy excuse. Your identification

should include two passport quality photographs. Photographs must be 2ร—2 inches in size. The image size from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head should be between 1 inch and 13/8 inches. They may be in color or black and white.

6. Show Up Early and Book Early Flights

Travelers who are flying are being advised to arrive early to the airport. For domestic flights, they are asked to show up

two hours before. For international flights, it's three hours. Although those following this rule normally end up wasting a

lot of time at the airport waiting for their flight, if you are Black, it is very possible that you will be

subject to much more scrutiny by security officers than other passengers. It is in your best interest to prepare for this

possibility than to allow someone to ruin your travel plans. Most airline trips are uneventful but the potential for

problems always exists when Blacks travel. Steps can be taken, however, to greatly reduce your chances of encountering

problems. Here is some advice for "defensive flying." When selecting a flight, remember that a departure early in the

day is less likely to be delayed than a later flight, due to "ripple" effects throughout the day. If you book the last

flight of the day, you could get stuck overnight. The more time you spend needlessly waiting around, the more your chances

to run into some type of unforeseen problem increases. All African Americans should book and fly early!

7. Items You Should Not Carry

Since the 911 terrorist attacks, there have been a number of items added to the list of things which passengers are not

allowed to bring with them when they travel, especially by air. There are also restrictions on how many items travelers can

take with them. Make sure to call the airlines, train or bus you will be traveling with or go to their website to get this

list of approved or disapproved items. Pack your bags accordingly so that you have no problems if and when you are asked to

undergo a baggage check. If you are traveling in your personal car, avoid packing anything that might arouse suspicion

(i.e. sharp objects, etc.) if you are stopped by local police for any reason. It might actually be a good idea to follow the

guidelines for air travelers in this regard. You are scrutinized while traveling in the same way that you are profiled

while driving. It is wrong...but it happens. Again, be prepared.

8. Be Careful of What You Pack

You could have your luggage searched, due to the heightened security measures. That is why you need to not only pack light,

but also avoid packing any personal items you would not want a stranger to see. Avoid putting the following in checked

baggage: Valuables (cash, jewelry). Don't rely on suitcase locks; they are easily defeated. Critical items (medicine, keys,

passport, tour vouchers, business papers). Irreplaceable items (manuscript, heirlooms). Fragile items (camera, eyeglasses,

glass containers). If these must be checked, wrap them carefully in padding. Perishables. Carry the above items either: on

your person, or in a small bag that you carry on board. Put a tag on the outside of your baggage with your name, home

address, and home and work phone numbers. Check with the airline for any limits it has on the size, weight, or number of

carry-on bags.

9. AFRICAN AMERICANS: Absolutely Avoid Arrest

Any person who physically assaults or threatens to physically assault a crew member or any other individual on an aircraft is

subject to a civil penalty of up to $25,000 under Federal law. US Department of Transportation - Federal Aviation

Administration.

* Drug Arrests

About 3,000 Americans are arrested abroad each year. Of these, approximately one-third are held on drug charges. Despite

repeated warnings, drug arrests and convictions are still a common occurrence. Many countries have stiff penalties for drug

violations and strictly enforce drug laws. If you are caught buying, selling, carrying or using any type of drug -- from

hashish to heroin, marijuana to mescaline, cocaine to quaaludes - YOU WILL BE ARRESTED. You are subject to foreign laws

overseas, not US laws, and, if arrested, you will find that:

* Few countries provide a jury trial.

* Trials are often long, with delays and postponements.

* Most countries do not accept bail.

* Pre-trial detention, often in solitary confinement, may last for months.

* If you are convicted, you face a possible sentence of:

2 - 10 years in many countries

A minimum of 6 years hard labor and a stiff fine in some countries

The death penalty in a number of countries (e.g. Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, Thailand, Saudi Arabia)

US citizens have been arrested abroad on drug charges because they possessed just one ounce or less of marijuana. The risk

of being jailed for just one marijuana cigarette is simply not worth it! Once you are arrested, the US consular officer

CANNOT get you out of jail nor out of the country! There is a very serious chance that you could spend the rest of your life

in a foreign prison if you are caught abroad with any type of drugs. Be advised.

10. Keep At Least Two Photo IDs On You

Be sure to carry two forms of identification at all times. If you are a green card or visa holder, be sure to carry these

documents with you when you travel, along with an up-to-date passport. Even while traveling by car, carry at least one other

picture ID with you apart from your license, such as a state ID. Make sure that all forms of ID that you are using have not

expired, especially passports, visas, and green cards. Acceptable proof includes: previous US passport;

Naturalization Certificate; Certificate of Citizenship; current, valid driver's license; government ID (city, state, or

federal); CLIA/ITA Travel Agent ID Card, military ID (military and dependents); work ID (must be currently employed by the

company); student ID (must be currently enrolled); Merchant Marines card (also known as a Seamen's or Z card); pilot or

flight attendant ID. Note: Social Security cards are NOT acceptable as identification. Also, make sure that all of your IDs

have the same name and are all spelled correctly to avoid any confusion.

11. Be Careful Crossing Borders

Forget the good old days of easy travel between the US and Canada border. Blacks are strongly urged to travel with all

relevant documents just in case you are profiled because of your looks, religion or origin, travel with all relevant

documents. That means a passport if you are citizen, green card if you are a resident alien and passport with visa if you

are in any other capacity. Do not rely on anything else like a birth certificate, etc. Again, taking the time to get a

travel agent ID card will make all your travels substantially more convenient, safer and cheaper. http://FreeTravel.ResourceZ.com

12. Examine Your Airline Boarding Pass

Take the time to look at your airline boarding pass. If you see several strange looking markings or stars on it, it means

you have been selected for extra security checks before you board your flight. That's why you should not waste too much time

browsing at the airport's stores or in its restaurants before getting on the plane. Allow yourself more time and be ready.

Stay calm, listen to all questions and answer carefully.

13. Do not Confront While Being Profiled

Do not be offended if you are singled out. Remain calm and allow yourself to be subject to more scrutiny than other passengers

because of the color of you skin, etc. Questioning why you are being singled out publicly may not be a good idea. It will

only make people more suspicious of you, since they may think you have something to hide. Even worse, it may give the

impression you are trying to break the law or resist arrest. It is in your best interest in this situation to just cooperate

, be patient, and take detailed notes of what has happened, as well as the names of those involved. Just avoid confrontation.

Know that you are not the first African American or person of color to be treated this way. Your community is with you in

spirit and it needs you to get through the injustice unharmed and free. Stay calm.

14. File Your Complaint

If you notice officials have definitely discriminated against you, then note down all of the information on the spot with

names, times, the location, and if there were any witnesses. From there, lodge a complaint against the airlines with the

Department of Transportation's Aviation Consumer Protection Division. You can also call them at (202) 366-2220 or send an

e-mail to airconsumer@ost.dot.gov. In addition, you can send detailed complaint letters to them at the following address:

Aviation Consumer Protection Division

US Department of Transportation

400 7th Street, S.W.

Washington, D.C. 20590

15. Avoid All Signs of Trouble

To diminish the risks of becoming an innocent bystander victim of a terrorist attack and reduce your exposure to the criminal

threat, there are a number of things that you should remember when checking into an airport. In the event of a disturbance

of any kind, go in the opposite direction. Do not get involved. Plan to check in early for your flight to avoid long lines at

the ticket counter. Go directly to the gate or secure area after checking your luggage. (Secure Zone Area between

security/immigration and the departure gate.) Avoid waiting rooms and shopping areas outside the secure areas. Stay away from

glass wall areas and airport coffee shops which are open to the concourse or public waiting areas.

16. Check Travel Warnings and Consular Info

Countries where avoidance of travel is recommended will have Travel Warnings as well as Consular Information Sheets issued by the State Department. Public Announcements are a means to disseminate information

about terrorist threats and other relatively short-term and/or trans-national conditions posing significant risks to the

security of American travelers. Consular Information Sheets are available for every country of the world. They include such

information as location of the US Embassy or Consulate in the subject country, unusual immigration practices, health

conditions, minor political disturbances, unusual currency and entry regulations, crime and security information, and drug

penalties. If an unstable condition exists in a country that is not severe enough to warrant a Travel Warning, a description

of the condition(s) may be included under an optional section entitled "Safety/Security." As the Department continues to

develop information on any potential security threats to US citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information

through its consular information program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to

information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747

toll-free in the US or outside the US and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-317-472-2 328.

17. Safety for Blacks While Traveling in Numbers

If possible, travel with at least two other people for not only safety and companionship, but also so that you have witnesses

who can testify on your behalf if you are subjected to discrimination or other problems. Group travel is also more cost

effective and even convenient as group tours can be planned, arranged and prepared for you and your group. This is another

huge perk of traveling with your travel agent ID card. Renaissance Travel Group can have your entire group trip planned

for you. Check out hot group travel deals and specials at http://www.Free2dream.TraveLogia.com

18. Save Your Receipts

Many Blacks and other non-whites accused of doing wrong were saved because they had some parking

lot, or gas station receipt to prove they were not involved in wrongdoing at a certain time. In today's world, where

Blacks are found guilty by association, it is important to be extremely vigilant. Collect your receipts no matter how

useless they may seem. Such items can be invaluable to your defense if somebody is profiles you because of your looks,

name or brown or black skin. Also, consider paying by credit card, which provides certain protections under Federal credit regulations. For example, in all

recent airline bankruptcies passengers who had charged their fare and were not provided service were able to have their

credit card company credit their account for the amount of the fare. Your credit receipt also provides further proof of your

actions and whereabouts should the need arise.

19. Write About What Happens to You and Share Your Experience

Write about your stories of discrimination while traveling. It is important for us to write and preserve these experiences.

It is not just about terrorism, it is about tyranny and racism. Today, it is Blacks and brown-skinned women and men who are

targets. Tomorrow, it will be someone else. Connect and become part of the ACLU, Amnesty International and other

organizations fighting for human rights and civil liberties.

20. Black on Black Support

Resolve to share this and all helpful information that you receive with every other Black person you know. You could be

saving someone's life without even knowing it. Blacks are in this together and will get through it together.

Dedicate yourself to be being part of the solution. As more and more African American and non-white travelers discover the

power of traveling with an exclusive ITA/CLIA Travel Agent ID card more and more people will be "Traveling While Black &

Never Going Back"!

Use Travel Information to Plan Your Vacation

When you have only a short time for a vacation, you want to make sure everything goes perfectly. Getting the right travel information is key to the success of your holiday. Plus, planning for your vacation can be (almost) as much fun as the vacation itself. Here are the steps you can take to get the information you need for the vacation you want.

First you have to collect travel information so you can decide where to go:

* Ask your fellow travelers where they want to go and what they are looking for in a vacation.

* Narrow your choices down to two or three possible destinations.

* Research your top choices. You can get tons of travel information online. Find photos, videos, and blogs of real people telling about their travel experiences. Visit travel sites, tour company sites (it doesn't cost to browse) and destination sites.

* Talk to people who've been to places you're considering.

* Calculate how much a trip to each of your top spots will cost.

* Consider all the information you have collected and decide where you will go.

Next is the fun part:

* Collect every bit of information you can find on your destination. Use the library to find photo collections and old histories. Buy current travel guides. Go online. Find out about the weather, the language, and the currency. Find out the must-see sites. If you have special interests, such as museums or natural history, gather information on them.

* Decide on places to stay. Are you going to a resort? On a tour? Will you be making the reservations or will a travel agent?

* Decide on transportation: how will you get there and how will you get around once you're there?

* If you're traveling abroad, find out if you need visas, proof of vaccinations, or other documents. You will need a passport, even for Mexico and Canada, so don't forget that essential document, and make sure it doesn't expire before the end of your trip.

* Now you can pack your bags. (You probably should check on any luggage limits before you pack.) Don't forget the old travelers' adage: You'll need half the clothes and twice the money you think you'll need.

Just before you leave:

* Re-check your reservations for hotels and transportation.

* Check current travel information for travel warnings or advisories. Political unrest, health warnings, and weather or environmental disasters can force you to change your plans. It's better to know about any problems before you head for the airport. Private and government websites have up-to-date travel information of this kind.

A note on business travel: You probably don't need to know about sightseeing for your business trip and someone else may be making all your plans and reservations for you. However, you still need to check for travel warnings and advisories. Your time is valuable-be sure to check current travel information before you depart.

Whether you're traveling for work or for fun, getting accurate travel information is important for a successful trip.

Travel Warning - Think Twice About Visiting Tijuana, Mexico

Author: Richard Chapo

Source: ezinearticles.com

Living in San Diego, we natives often hop the border to experience the good times in Mexico. From tremendous food to fine people to great surf to Tequila, there is something for everyone. Unfortunately, the current state of things in Tijuana and down the coast below the border are bad.

When you cross the border from San Diego into Mexico, you cross directly into Tijuana. People will either spend a day playing around in "TJ" or head out to the coast. On the coast, you can find such epic destinations as Rosarito and Ensenada. There are also plenty of little spots between those towns where lobster is as cheap and plentiful as the cervezas.

For the last year or so, all of these destinations have become off limits for most Americans and foreigners in general. The problem? The drug war. The various drug cartels are fighting for territory. The police in Tijuana are so corrupt that the basically work for these cartels. The Mexican federal government has sent in the military, but it has just turned a two party brawl into a three party war.

How bad are things? This past weekend ended with reports of 30 murders in Tijuana alone. Word from Mexican citizens coming across the border suggests there are far more occurring down the coast along the beach areas.

As if murder wasn't bad enough, the types of murder occurring are horrific. We are talking about stuff you read about happening in the Mid-East. Decapitations. Kids being killed. Mothers. All and all, it is a horrific mess to say the least.

When times are good, Mexico is a tremendous place to spend some time. Unfortunately, times are not good now. Even the most pro-Mexico natives in San Diego are staying on the north side of the border. If you are considering visiting Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada or the land in between them - think again. It isn't worth the risk. If things go well, you will just be robbed of your car and possessions. If they go poorly, you'll be dead.

Eventually, the drug war in northern Mexico will play out. The government will win? Unlikely. Instead, one faction of the drug cartels will take control. When that happens, things will calm down and hopping across the border will be an option again. Until then, you are better off looking at other vacation destinations.
